The Junior League of London Receives Honourable Mention in the 2010 Junior League Award for Membership Development

Leading international volunteer group increases membership by providing members with flexibility in fulfilling requirements

London—April  22, 2010 The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) today announced that the Junior League of London received Honourable Mention in its 2010 Junior League Award for Membership Development. The award was made at AJLI’s 88th Annual Conference in Orlando on April 17.  Through its annual awards programme, AJLI celebrates the outstanding accomplishments and significant contributions that Junior Leagues make both internally within the 293 individual Leagues and externally, working to solve some of the toughest and most urgent problems in their communities.

“Because we are a volunteer organisation, membership development is a critical element of our success—keeping members engaged and growing and retaining membership,” said AJLI President-Elect and member of the Junior League of Monmouth County, Delly Beekman.  “By giving all members an opportunity to be true stakeholders in their communities, Leagues continue to develop civic leaders who create and execute significant programmes that strengthen those communities.”

Looking to stimulate member engagement, the Junior League of London gave new and recent members an early opportunity for hands-on work in the community and provided members with flexibility in fulfilling requirements, including reduced meeting requirements and the time needed by Actives to meet their commitments.  The changes in membership recruitment and retention resulted in significant growth in members while elevating the League’s profile in the London non-profit community.

About The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc.

Founded in 1901 by New Yorker and social activism pioneer, Mary Harriman, the Junior Leagues are charitable nonprofit organisations of women, developed as civic leaders, creating demonstrable community impact.

Today, The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) is comprised of more than 160,000 women in 293 Junior Leagues throughout Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and the United States.  Together, they constitute one of the largest, most effective volunteer organisations in the world.
