Holiday Hampers is the Junior League of London’s (JLL) signature community project, as well as our longest-running community programme. Now in it’s 21st year, the programme provides hampers filled with gifts, food, toiletries and other essentials for some of London’s most vulnerable populations during the holiday season.
Working with 14 partner agencies, we are setting an ambitious goal to deliver 700 hampers this December, which will benefit over 1,500 individuals. Each hamper will be carefully customised to the needs of the recipients, whether for an elderly individual, a single mother escaping domestic violence, or families working their way out of poverty or homelessness. Last year, for example, hampers for young mothers included: soup, dried pasta, canned fruit and vegetables, biscuits, tea, jam, chocolate, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, a book and a personalised children’s gift.
Our aim is to help these families and individuals feel the spirit of the holidays. We understand from our partners that our hampers are often the only gifts they receive, and they make a real difference in their lives. As a West London Action for Children staff member reported, “The Hampers were the highlight of the Christmas activities for our clients. They made them feel cared for and far less isolated.”
There are many ways you can get involved with Holiday Hampers.
1) Purchase a hamper
Donated hampers are the best way to give! There’s no more direct way to make an impact than buying special gifts for your assigned family. It can be a great way to get your own children involved to teach them the importance of giving back.
2) Organise an office drive
We don’t just give gifts in our Holiday Hampers – we also provide families and elderly with essentials like food and toiletries. Bring in a big box to the office and ask your co-workers to fill it with
• Tinned soup, vegetables or fruit
• Dried pasta and jarred sauce
• Tea and coffee
• Body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes or soap
Offer a small prize to the person who brings in the most items to get the competitive juices flowing!
3) Help us to publicise the programme
We are always interested in finding ways to increase awareness about Holiday Hampers. Are you a journalist looking for a story? Do you have technical skills in photography, video editing or PR that you would like to contribute? Please contact our Communications team at email@example.com.
4) Provide space to assemble the Hampers.
